2023 and Me


Well the calendar was changing from 2012 to 2013 and I was feeling kinda down.  So I made a decision, for the New Year, to make a daily post.  I wrote:

"Feeling like 2013 will be "lucky 13"......I want to try to post, daily, why I feel lucky....let's see if I can find something each day to feel lucky about - hoping it is a struggle, not to find one, but to narrow down the choices......"

I went on to post that I felt lucky to be working at Penn and Penn Nursing.  That started a daily discipline that, for the last decade, I have done ALMOST daily.  Yes, in 2022, work (ironically) was a but overwhelming and, thus, I missed a LOT of days.  I do not do New Year's Resolutions, but I DO hope (and will try very hard) that I can make it each day (or almost every day) this year.  So, now I need to come up with a theme.

Y'all know I love numbers and, so, I was looking for a Daily Theme that fits in with a numerical hook, and one that means something to me.  And, so, even though I have never done any DNA Research and I do not want it to seem to self- focused, my theme for 2023 will be 2023 and me.  No, it will not be about genealogy, and it won't even be about ME, specifically, but it will be about the things, this year, that speak to me and about which I care.

So 2023: 2023 is 7 times 289 and 17 times 119.  I, honestly, thought 2023 was a prime number but, INSTEAD, it is divisible by 7 and 17, two of my favorite numbers.  I think this is a good numerical omen!

So hang on for the ride or, if you do not like these, don't :-).  Every time I think about stopping, people tell me that they appreciate the daily reflection and, frankly, it is a good discipline to end each day with a daily reflection (especially if they are positive, which I try for them to be).

So 2023 looks to be an interesting year.  A lot of questions will be answered and, frankly. things we are not even questioning yet will be questions (and maybe answered as well!)

Uncle Ron and Me

  I knew that the 43rd day of 2023 would be the day I broke my streak of non-posts. Sorry for the busyness of life (mainly work) that is taking my time and sapping my inspiration for posts. But, on 2/12/2023, I knew I was going to post. I THOUGHT it would be about the Superbowl and the Eagles but, today's 23 and me is not about that (and not because they lost). No, the Family Sherr experienced a larger and more significant loss today, and that is why my post is about Uncle Ron and Me. Yes, friends, that means that DJ Rockin' Ron Sherr passed on from this life today. He fought his sicknesses for a long, long time and he lived a long, full of music and joy, life up until the end. My favorite Ron memory is when people told me they loved that my brother was such a good DJ for the Middle School dances. Yep - my in-his-70s uncle could pass as a guy in his 40s. Because Ron's joy and love of music and photography and making people happy (and dancing) truly kept him young ...

My Birthday and Me

  It's not that I mind being a year older (as I say, it beats the alternative), but I am not always enthusiastic about celebrating my own birthday.  But, on the 77th day of 2023, I did have to think about My Birthday and Me.  First, I attended a funeral of a fellow umpire, who recently passed away suddenly after a cancer diagnosis, and I discovered, by reading the obituary in the paper, that he was younger then I am.  As a mentor to me on the baseball and softball diamonds, I assumed he was older, and I was wrong.  Funerals always make me think of mortality and that was an interesting juxtaposition of thoughts on the morning my my own date of being born.  Then it was to the amazing March Boys Birthday Luncheon that our family always has.  The first one we have had without Grandpa Bill George, and so, once again, mortality thoughts crept into my head.  And there were the amazing messages from my friends and family.  On Facebook, Texts, Cards, ...

The Palestra and Me

  Day #62 of 2023 was the last game, in the 2022-23 season, for Penn Basketball in the wonder that is The Palestra ("College Basketball's Most HISTORIC Gym").  It did not end the way we were hoping on 3/3/23, as the Penn Women fell to dreaded Princeton.  And my reflections tonight are about The Palestra and Me.  I an so lucky to have been a part of the Penn Band that has allowed me to take in hundreds (maybe even thousands) of contests in this cathedral.  So, tonight, I spent my last evening in the Palestra until probably November tonight, at least there will be baseball soon!
